Mission
The Purple Bamboo Ensemble is a performance and study ensemble at the University of

Arizona; it is a mixed student and community group that sings and plays traditional Chinese

instruments in the silk and bamboo tradition, as well as other musical styles from throughout

Asia. The Purple Bamboo Ensemble was launched by the University of Arizona

ethnomusicologist Dr. Janet Sturman in 1999 and has continued under the direction of multiple

accomplished musical directors.
