Good morning!
I am your Arts and Sciences Minister, Hug von Sporck. (Missy Rough).
Call me Sporck! My pronouns are they/them. I am looking forward to seeing you all after the break and look forward to meeting our new members!
I hope your Summer is going well. Are you excited for the Fall Semester?
We are going to have a very busy semester with arts classes, guest teachers, guest speakers, society-wide events that are day-trips as well as camping events. I have attached the Fall 2026 Schedule so that you can add the events to your calendar.
FAQ: Q: Do we have dues?
A: We do not have dues for this club.
However, the Society for Creative Anachronism is around $40/year and is optional. The only people required to join are club officers. Some events do have entrance fees. Benefits of becoming an official SCA member include reduced event fees (Generally around $10 cheaper).

Q: Can I bring people to practice?
A: Yes, please do!
They don't have to be a club member, you can just bring people. It's okay and even encouraged.
Q: How does one get to events if they do not have a vehicle?
A: In our Discord, we have a rideshare channel where people can offer or request rides to/from events.

Q: Does everyone who participates in sword fighting need to wear an athletic cup?
A: Yes! While we do have loaner gear, we don't share athletic cups.
There are a ton of places you can purchase them online or in person at a store. You are one search away from knowing where to get yours.
Q: You mentioned a crafting night?
A: Yes! We meet unoficially on most Sundays for extended crafting and socializing from 3 to 6pm on campus. We have loads of fabric and sewing machines and crafting materials like yarn, embroidery floss and block printing to name a few.
Do you want to make garb? Yeah you do! You will be so fancy! We will help teach you how to make your very first outfit. We have some loaner outfits for events as well.
Q: What is the Society for Creative Anachronism?
A: 61 years ago some college students had a graduation party and sword fighting tournament using broomsticks that somehow morphed into the 2nd largest non-profit educational society that focuses on keeping medieval arts, crafts and sciences alive.
There are people in the SCA all over the world, and it isn't just Europe! Anywhere on Earth, any culture, they were doing stuff. It is highly probable that you can find someone in the SCA who specializes in arts or highly specialized historical knowledge.
Q: Will you have a newcomer email?
A: Yes! Just before our first meeting on August 27.
I like to plan things in advance and wanted to get meeting and event information out to everyone so you can plan out your semester as well.

STUDY ABROAD!
The U of A has tons of grant money to help you travel and study abroad!
Dr. Albrecht Classen leads a medieval tour class every Summer.
The course earns you 6 credits, which can go to German Studies, History, any literary or religious study, art history, philosophy, creative writing, Slavic Studies, or Medieval Studies. Any student from anywhere in the world can join this program.
They only require: enthusiasm, motivation, and passion for the study of the pre-modern world. You must be reasonably fit physically because an essential component of this course consists of daily excursions, climbing up hills to visit a castle, climbing stairs up to the top of a tower, walking city walls, roaming through an old city center, etc. But there will be class every day to study the history, literature, art history, philosophy, and religion of the Middle Ages.
Virtually every student who has joined this program has expressed greatest enthusiasm about it, as you can see on the page above with statements (main site link at end of this section).
Places examined: medieval city centers, city halls, churches, cathedrals, castles, city walls on our daily excursions. Class every day, studying medieval literature, philosophy, and religion. All in English. Faculty-led. Any student from anywhere in the world can join us. I only need your enthusiasm, excitement, and motivation, and a passion for travel and learning on the road.
